How to report human rights violations? ›

If you believe your civil rights, or someone else's, have been violated, submit a report using our online form. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, please call 911 or local police. If you are reporting misconduct by law enforcement or believe you have experienced a hate crime, please contact the FBI.

Common Violations

Typical violations which result in investigations may involve, but are not limited to: Illegal disposal of hazardous waste. Export of hazardous waste without the permission of the receiving country. Illegal discharge of pollutants to a water of the United States.

You may also submit a complaint anonymously. However, if you do not provide your email address, you will not receive updates on the status of your complaint. Additionally, anonymous complaints may be more difficult to investigate because agency staff will not have a contact to answer questions about the report.

Abductions, arbitrary arrests, detentions without trial, political executions, assassinations, and torture often follow. In cases where extreme violations of human rights have occurred, reconciliation and peacebuilding become much more difficult.

Examples of civil rights include the right to vote, the right to a fair trial, the right to government services, the right to a public education, the right to gainful employment, the right to housing, the right to use public facilities, freedom of religion.

The most common complaint involves allegations of color of law violations. Another common complaint involves racial violence, such as physical assaults, homicides, verbal or written threats, or desecration of property.

This statute makes it a crime for any person acting under color of law, statute, ordinance, regulation, or custom to willfully deprive or cause to be deprived from any person those rights, privileges, or immunities secured or protected by the Constitution and laws of the U.S.

Personal injury lawsuits such as those stemming from car accidents, medical malpractice, or slip and fall incidents are a one type of civil suit. Other common civil lawsuits include breach of contract, product liability, divorce and family law, property disputes, and housing disputes.

Littering is illegal in most jurisdictions and can result in fines or other penalties. By throwing trash in a national park, which is a protected area, you are violating the law and damaging the environment. Another example of a legal violation is calling 911 to report a crime that did not happen.

There are obvious examples of human rights violations that continue even today. The use of torture or other inhumane treatment is a common example. Or the jailing of political opponents simply for holding peaceful protests against their government. Or the persecution of religious or ethnic minorities.

Talk to someone whom you trust as soon as possible and if appropriate, ask the person to intervene on your behalf if you are not comfortable in handling it alone. Check the policy in the workplace to see if there is a procedure for making a human rights or harassment complaint.

If someone feels that a restriction of their rights is unreasonable, they can talk to the department that made the decision. If a person thinks that a government department or agency has breached their human rights, they can make a complaint directly to that department.
