How to find out if someone died in Riverside County? ›

The Office of Vital Records in the Public Health department registers all births and deaths within the County of Riverside. Riverside County certificates of births or deaths that occurred this year and last year only can be ordered from Riverside University Health System-Public Health.

Any member of the public, including the media and elected officials, may access unrestricted records of this department by submitting a written and signed request for each record sought and paying any associated fees (Government Code § 6253).

How long is the body kept at the Coroner's office? Normally we try to release the decedent to a funeral home within two to three days. Depending on the circ*mstances of the death, and confirming identification, sometimes it is necessary to keep the remains longer.

Generally, most decedents are available for release within two to three days. However, there are times when the release may be delayed for various reasons beyond our control. Your Funeral Director will coordinate the release on your behalf.

Two state-level California Death Indexes can be found at Ancestry.com (a database anyone can access from any library branch and Central Library) or FamilySearch.org (a free internet database).

4: They're Not Cheap. Who pays for an autopsy? Generally, the operation is financed by the party that's demanding or requesting it. If somebody dies under suspicious circ*mstances, a state or county may call for a forensic autopsy.

Local laws define the deaths a coroner must investigate. The most often legally required investigation is for sudden or unexpected deaths, in addition to deaths where no attending physician was present.

There are four general stages of putrefaction: Putrefaction (4-10 days after death) – Autolysis occurs and gases (odor) and discoloration starts. Black putrefaction (10-20 days after death) – exposed skin turns black, bloating collapses and fluids are released from the body.

Photography of the deceased and/or the scene where death occurred. Autopsy of the body of the deceased. Toxicology testing of the deceased. Collecting and holding any personal property from (or about) the deceased person.

Who pays for autopsy in California? ›

There is no charge to the family for an autopsy that is required by the State of California. The cost is absorbed through the operation of the Medical Examiner Office and funded through tax dollars. In the event of a family-requested autopsy, a fee will be charged.

If the human remains are properly preserved they can be stored for longer periods of time. In most cases, so long as the remains are properly refrigerated, funeral homes can store a body for a few days to a few weeks.

What an autopsy report can't show. In general, an autopsy report cannot detail in what order a person's wounds were inflicted. The report will detail the number and location of wounds. Detectives can then use this information, along with other evidence that has been gathered, to infer how an incident unfolded.

As an elected official, a coroner has the power to make decisions and has equal footing with other local elected officials. That places the coroner in a strong position to withstand political pressures imposed by other elected officials and to compete vigorously for the office's budget allocation.
