To remove dandelions from your yard, this root has to be killed. Hand digging is impractical, because pieces of the root that are broken off and left in the soil will sprout new plants. Regular feedings, 2-4 times per year, provide the nutrients your lawn needs to grow thick to help crowd out dandelions. Administer a Pre-Emergent Herbicide
Late winter is the time for applying a pre-emergent herbicide to your lawn and gardens. This is the time to prevent the spread of dandelion seed.
Mow High
Cut your lawn at a higher mower setting and adhere to a strict feeding schedule to keep your grass tall and thick. Tall grass chokes out weeds.
Leave Clippings
Do not bag the grass. Leaving the mulched clippings on the lawn smothers weeds and hinders the growth of new weeds. Enhance the health of your grass by leaving the clippings where they are after mowing the lawn.
Avoid Hand Pulling
Dandelion roots can grow up to three inches, so hand pulling is often a waste of time pulling the Dandelions are only effective if the plant’s entire root can be removed. Avoid wasting your time with futile removal methods.
Improve Soil Conditions
The standard advice is to “top dress” the lawn with compost, leave the clippings, fertilize organically and wait…and wait…and wait for all of that organic matter to eventually decompose and improve the soil. If your lawn is prone to dandelions do a soil test and adjust your soil’s pH balance.
