“Don’t leave it until it becomes too late, the best time to act is as soon as you notice any thinning or hair loss.

“The quicker you act the better overall result you will have from implementing these factors.”

"These can be obtained from eating red meat, nuts, and leafy green vegetables.

“Other important ingredients are palmetto, biotin, argan oil, rosemary oil, and coconut oil amongst many others.”

TOPICAL TIPS

Dr. Rajput said his patients use natural shampoos such as Waterman's and moisturizing oils to reduce hair loss.

“We also recommend platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections that help to increase blood flow and support/promote hair growth and overall hair health,” he said.

He said the treatment can be used alongside the hair loss product Minoxidil for effective results.

Male hair loss sufferers may also benefit from using over-the-counter medication finasteride.

Dr. Rajput also suggested spending at least an hour a day in the gym, walking, or jogging.

“Cardiovascular exercise is also recommended to increase the blood flow to the scalp as a lot of hair loss stems from lack of blood flow,” he said.

“Head massages are also beneficial and recommended weekly.”

STYLISH STRANDS

Dr. Rajput said hair thinning can be reduced by avoiding heat tools and hairstyles that put stress on strands.

“Braiding hair, wearing a tight head covering such as bandana and turbans, having hair extensions or weaves, etc. can all cause traction hair loss — known medically as traction alopecia,” he said.

“Regardless of the hairstyle, it is very important to keep the scalp hydrated and moisturized and to not wear your hair up in tight, scraped-back hairstyles.

“This causes unnecessary stress and tension on the hair and will likely lead to breakage and hair loss over time.”

What causes hair loss?

Celebrity hair transplant surgeon Dr. Matee Rajput said androgenetic alopecia is one of the most common causes of hair loss and is related to aging.

“This mainly affects men but can also affect women as well when they get into older age,” he said.

“Chronic illnesses including diseases affecting the bowels, diabetes, epilepsy, and other serious illnesses like this can cause much more stress on the body and lead to significant hair loss.”

Dr. Rajput said a diet lacking in vitamins and minerals may also cause shedding.

“Diets that deficient in vitamin D, zinc, iron, magnesium, and vitamin C can contribute significantly to hair loss,” he said.

“In addition, stress and anxiety are also some of the common causes as this causes unnecessary strain on the body.

“Other elements that can cause hair loss include overuse of chemicals on the hair such as sulfates, parabens, ammonia, and sodium lauryl sulfate are particularly harmful to the scalp and are known to cause hair loss.

“Genetic also plays a big role in hair loss so if your parents have experienced hair loss then it is more likely that their children could also suffer from hair loss too.”
