How to Program a Transponder Key?
Transponder keys, also known as car keys with a chip, were designed to protect your car against theft. The chip inside the key is programmed into the car’s engine, and only the programmed key can start the vehicle. While this may have proven effective, it becomes a burden when you lose your car keys.
You do not have another alternative once the keys are lost than to get a new one programmed to your vehicle. Can key programming could be a hassle if you have a busy schedule. However there are ways you can program your transponder key to your vehicle, but you will need to have a programmed key to switch on your car’s engine before programming the new one.

How to Program a Transponder Key
You first need to insert the working key into your ignition and turn it to the ‘on’ position. What you want is for the electrical accessories to come on, not to start your engine. So, ensure you don’t turn your key to the start position.
After that, turn the key back to the off position and remove it. Once done, insert the new car key blank and repeat the step above. This is where it gets tricky. Ensure that you insert the key blank immediately after you remove your programmed key. Once it passes five seconds, you have to start the process again.
After turning the ignition to the ‘on’ position using the blank key, wait 10 minutes and turn it to the ‘off’ position. You will notice the security light on your dashboard turns on when programming your key, then turns off after some seconds. This shows that your car key has been programmed. However, not all car models do this; you may need to test manually.
If this method works, then you’ve successfully programmed your transponder key. Assuming it doesn’t, you will need to call one of our locksmiths to help you out. As we mentioned earlier, not all car models can be programmed because some cars require special devices and software for programming.
What to Do If You Lose Your Original Transponder Key
If you’ve lost your original transponder key, you will need to contact an auto locksmith to get a new car key. Without the originals, it will be almost impossible to take the DIY route. An expert locksmith will reprogram the car key to your vehicle using special equipment. During this process, your locksmith will likely request for car’s VIN.
