A quick and easy Homemade Buttermilk Ranch Dressing Recipe made with fresh herbs.
Around our home ranch dressing is a condiment that is always kept stocked up. Since a young age, our son has enjoyed ranch dressing, or “dip” as he always called it when he was little, on just about everything. I mean everything. I don’t blame him. A tasty ranch dressing full of fresh from the garden flavors is always a good thing. Plus, if it meant he would eat more veggies (along with all of those chicken fingers over the years) then that wasokay with me.
This recipe for Homemade Buttermilk Ranch Dressing is packed with fresh herbs that mingle with mayonnaise, sour cream and buttermilk. It is super quick and easy to make too, which is another good thing about this recipe. Serve this tasty dressing with a fresh salad, or with a vegetable tray as a party appetizer and just watch the veggies get all gobbled up!
Homemade Buttermilk Ranch Dressing Recipe notes:
- The recipe below calls for fresh herbs. Dried herbs may be substituted if needed. Use 1/3 of dried for the amount of fresh herbs that are called for.
- This recipe makes a thick ranch dressing. If a thinner consistency is preferred, add just a little bit of buttermilk at a time until desired thickness is reached.
- If you own a zester, it is a great tool to use for quickly grating the garlic straight into the mixture. It makes it so much easier!

This recipe looks great..(as does all lovely Amy’s postings…)…
The only thing I don’t like using is Hellman’s GMO soybean oil mayonnaise….
The “natural” mayos usually use GMO canola (rapesead) oil…
Has anyone found a healthy mayo yet? or could think of a substitute?Maybe I’ll just sub a cup of extra virgin olive oil for the mayo…
Jennifer Renfroe —
There is a “Just Mayo” that is at Kroger’s and Harris Teeter stores. I can’t have soy because of my allergy. It is healthy.

This is very good ranch dip, and dressing with more buttermilk added. I also added about 2 tsp Dijon mustard to make it a little tangier. Thanks for a good recipe!
Amy Johnson —
Thank you for pointing out the typo. I am reformatting all recipes and all I can think of is that the amount auto-filled when I began typing the serving amount. I have fixed the recipe. Thank you again.

Just made this and I’m getting a very strong mayo flavor. Adding buttermilk doesn’t soften it to much. Where did I go wrong?
