What is the acceptance rate for MIT econ? ›

The department receives approximately 800 applications each year. Of those, about 40 students are admitted and 20-24 enroll.

We are proud to offer one of the most rigorous undergraduate economics programs in the US.

GPA. There is no minimum required GPA, but competitive applicants generally have a GPA of 3.5 or above, and mostly A's in mathematics and science courses.

The school subscribes to a holistic admissions process and doesn't have minimum MIT GPA requirements. However, due to the caliber of students accepted, you should aim for a weighted GPA of over 4.17. Strong MIT essays will also be key to a successful “how to get into MIT” strategy.

Is UChicago or MIT better? ›

Ultimately, both UChicago and MIT are excellent institutions, but your choice will depend on your priorities and preferences. If a well-rounded education with an equal emphasis on social sciences and STEM is important to you, UChicago might be a better fit.

Can I study at MIT for free? While you can't pursue a full-time course at MIT for free, you can opt for the open-course ware or OCW. It is a free and open educational resource provided for faculty, self-learners, and students globally by MIT.

Rigorous Course Load

It's not enough to just have a high GPA – you will also need to have taken a challenging course load in order to get into MIT. This means that you will want to have taken honors or AP courses across subjects.

At MIT, we admit the most talented students in the world through need-blind admissions. Once admitted, we meet your full financial need for all four years of your undergraduate career. We define financial aid as any funding that helps to finance your college expenses.

MIT's early action acceptance rate was 4.7%, with 14,781 applicants and 697 acceptances and 9,488 deferred to regular decision; of those deferred, only 176 were later admitted (or 1.8%). MIT's regular decision acceptance rate was 2.2%, with 640 students admitted out of 28,474 total applicants (regular + deferred).

This means the school is extremely selective. Meeting their GPA requirements and SAT/ACT requirements is very important to getting past their first round of filters and proving your academic preparation. If you don't meet their expectations, your chance of getting in is nearly zero.

The term 'Ivy League' has since become synonymous with academic prestige and elite universities in the United States. While MIT is indeed a highly prestigious institution, it is not part of the Ivy League because it's not in the Division I athletic conference with those other schools.
