Edinburgh's Daytime TV look set to be a stomping success, says Jim Gellatly (2024)

JIMSAYS: Daytime TV may be a new name, but they have great pedigree. Formally Hunter & The Bear, I assumed the name change was down to the departure of guitarist Jimmy Hunter in 2018.

Will Irvine (The Bear) and Jimmy originally formed as a duo around 2012 before forging their path as an acclaimed four-piece and played an early arena tour supporting the legendary Eric Clapton.

A reboot may have been in the back of their minds, but they decided to go for it last year.

Will explained: "When John joined it felt like some sort of change was necessary even though we were 75 per cent still the same band.

"It was more of an artistic decision than anything else. It just felt right."

Will's originally from Achiltibuie in the Highlands but is now based in Edinburgh.

The rest of the guys are from down south. Brighton lad Gareth and Brummie John live in London while Chris is from Shrewsbury and still in the Midlands.

Like so many of us during lockdown that has meant new ways of working. Will said: "It means we end up doing loads of hanging out over Zoom which is quite weird.

"The rest of the time it's just a case of making sure we're getting together in person regularly even if it's a bit of a faff.

"It's only four and a bit hours down to London for me. I'm always met with one of the guys delightful sofas to
sleep on so can't complain.

"It's unconventional but works well for us."

They've yet to debut as Daytime TV on the live circuit. Indeed, the upcoming tour has been postponed a couple of times.

Will told me: "We have a UK Tour in November that we named 'The Tour That Absolutely Will Happen' for obvious reasons!

"I've never looked forward to anything so much in all my life."

The guys did manage to put in a performance last week with a live stream gig from SWG3 in Glasgow.

Will added: "It was raising funds for We Need Crew, an amazing charity that offer financial aid music crew who are struggling because of Covid.

"We love our small crew like family so we wanted to honour them by raising some funds for the wider crew community.

"It went down really well and was a pleasure to turn up the amps and get to play a set after all this sitting around."

We've had two explosive singles from Daytime TV so far, Side Effects and current release Zombie.

Both are stomping indie rock numbers that bode well for the debut album. Will revealed: "It's getting there. There's a chance we might get back in the studio one more time to sneak a little something special on there but it's all taking shape nicely and is 95 per cent recorded.

"We're working on things like the artwork at the moment which is always fun for about five minutes and then you realise you have four totally different opinions in the band, and it becomes impossible!
