1. Bombe Alaska
Nothing screams the 70s quite like sponge, ice cream and meringue drenched in rum and set on fire, right?
2. Vol-au-vents
Remember when it was the height of sophisti-catering to whack frozen pastry circles into the oven then fill them with delights such as coronation chicken, turkey carbonara or prawn mayo?
3. Mini ham and pineapple pizzas
We still love the craze for mini pizzas, but long gone are the days when the only topping to exist was ham and pineapple.
4. Battenberg cake
We defy you to find a prettier cake than this pastel-coloured, marzipan-covered chequerboard creation famous in the 80s.
5. Scotch eggs
These meat ‘n’ crumb-coated eggs are currently making a massive comeback, with Heston Blumenthal even making his own paprika version.
6. Cheese fondue
Fondue: the meal that is delicious and fun, but capable of causing many a family argument as the battle of the dunk begins. We love dipping charred bread, chunks of apple and radish into melted gruyere and emmenthal.
7. Crepes Suzette
This orangey, boozy French dessert was apparently created by mistake by a Parisian waiter serving a crepe to the then-Prince of Wales. You’ll still find it on many French restaurant menus!
8. Apricot chicken
Apricot chicken remains a very beloved dish among taste.com.au users, with this version being a particular favourite.
9. Dip with melba toasts
Melba toasts and smoked trout could be found in many a pantry and fridge back in the 90s. We love this modern version of the old school combo.
10. Chicken Kiev
We’re not surprised chicken stuffed with garlic butter, covered in breadcrumbs and baked until golden and melty became popular. We still think it’s a winner!
11. Coffee walnut cake
Coffee and walnut. A winner cake combo back in the 80s and even more so now!
12. Sesame prawn toasts
Sesame prawn toasts (with compulsory grease) was a staple on every 80s Chinese takeaway order, together with spring rolls, egg fried rice and chow mein.
13. Crumpets
Originally an Anglo Saxon invention, this griddle cake made from flour and yeast is best smeared with butter and drizzled with syrup.
14. Cherry coconut slice
Both jam and coconut were huge back in the day, but both have made a recent comeback. This slice has always been top of our baking wishlist.
15. Devils on horseback
If you think about it, this retro date-and-bacon blend is almost like an early version of salted caramel. We like it!
16. Devilled eggs
When someone first scooped out the yellow part of a boiled egg, mixed it with mayo and curry powder, then popped it back in, people must have thought they were yolking! But we think it’s a cracking (ahem) dish…
17. Madeira cake
This lemon cake named after Portuguese wine (which we wish was still served with it!) is delicate yet firm, zingy yet sweet.
18. Prawn co*cktail
Prawns with co*cktail sauce still appears on most Australian Christmas dinner tables and why not? It might be retro, but it’s delicious.
